NE-02 Democratic Congressional Candidate Kara Eastman supports top Aide Fatima Flores-Lagunas attending US Supreme Court DACA Hearing; DACA recipient Flores-Lagunas Faces Deportation Because of Trump Order
Omaha, NE. Today, Kara Eastman, small business owner, the 2018 Democratic Nominee for Nebraska’s Second Congressional District, and 2020 candidate for Nebraska’s 2nd District seat, issued her support for her Field Director Fatima Flores-Lagunas who is attending today's US Supreme Court Hearing on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)
Kara Eastman released this statement:
Today, a top aide to US Congressional Candidate (NE-02) Kara Eastman, Fatima Flores-Lagunas, Field Director for Eastman's Congressional Campaign, is attending the US Supreme Court oral arguments in Washington DC on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program with skin in the game: She is a Dreamer/DACA recipient directly impacted by President Trump's decision to end the program. The 29-year old Omaha resident faces potential deportation even though she has lived in Nebraska's largest city since her early childhood when she was brought to the US from Mexico. While Trump's decision to overturn the Obama-era executive order impacting over 700,000 was overturned by lower court decisions, their fate, and Fatima's fate is in the hands of the Supreme Court today.
Said Eastman, "Fatima is in DC today to join thousands of others to bear witness to the Supreme Court. She is a DREAMer who has known only Omaha as her home. If you, or your neighbor, colleague, friend or relative is a DACA recipient, please know that I am 100% supporting Fatima and you all. We are so proud of Fatima and in awe of her bravery and her patriotism. Estoy con ustedes (I am with you)."
Said Flores-Lagunas, who was reached standing in line outside in the rain and cold this morning waiting to get in to the US Supreme Court Building, "It is energizing being in this space with allies, DREAMers/DACA recipients. Regardless of the outcome of this case, DACA recipients like me need legal protections. That is why it is important that we elect politicians like Kara Eastman who will stand up and vote for the DREAM Act in Congress. Until this gets resolved, we will be in limbo beholden to the powers that be."
Eastman called on Congress to pass the DREAM Act that would provide a pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients and criticized US Rep Don Bacon (NE-02) for failing to demand that President Trump support the legislation without strings attached.
